Computer Competency Requirements

Starting Fall 2008, students will be required to complete the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) exam. Students may take the IC3 exam prior to the first day of class at any Certiport testing center in the country. IC3 exam scores must be submitted upon enrolling in LIS 6080. In order to be successful in the SLIS, all students are required, at a minimum, to have the following computer competencies before starting classes.This competency exam is required for all degrees and certificates. Preparation workshops will be provided at orientation, University Library System workshops and online through Mediasite.

Computer/ File Management

Student must have the ability to:

  • create directories
  • customize operating system functions
  • cut/copy/paste between applications
  • download and install software
  • find/share files
  • run programs
  • save/restore files to disk
  • update operating systems
  • zip/unzip files

Computer Protection

Students must have the ability to:

  • install/update antivirus software
  • install/update antimalware software
  • update and run scans using antivirius/malware software

Email/Discussion Boards

Students must have the ability to:

  • handle e-mail - read/reply, create signatures, delete, manage
  • send/receive/open email attachments
  • subscribe to listserv/discussion lists

Internet

Students must have the ability to:

  • navigate websites
  • search on the web

Productivity Software

Students must have the ability to:

  • Perform basic word processing tasks
  • use various presentation tools
