School Library Media Endorsement Student Responsibilities

Requirements
Requirements for school library media (SLM) endorsement are set by the State of Michigan. The School of Library and Information Science ensures that completed coursework meets state requirements. Please note that SLIS does not determine what those requirements are.

School Library Media Plan of Work
Students seeking school library media endorsement should complete the Plan of Work for School Library Media. The Plan of Work specifies the courses you must complete to meet the endorsement requirements. PLEASE NOTE: a valid teaching certificate is required as a prerequisite for enrollment in LIS 7310 and 7680 (does not apply to students admitted prior to April 1, 2004).

Advisor
Students must work closely with their advisor when completing the Plan of Work to ensure that all of the requirements for endorsement are met.

Michigan Teaching Certificate
Students seeking endorsement must have a valid Michigan teaching certificate in order to be endorsed as a school library media specialist in the State of Michigan. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification
Students must pass the library media subject exam portion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) before they can become endorsed. Information about MTTC registration is available in this packet and at http://www.mttc.nesinc.com/. Students should have their scores sent to the Wayne State University Teacher Certification Office.

Application for Endorsement
Students must complete the application for endorsement which is available from the WSU Teacher Certification Office (489 Education). The form is also available at http://coe.wayne.edu/2011-2012/endorsement_app.pdf. The application and all documents required for endorsement must be gathered by the student and delivered to the Teacher Certification Office. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION: (1) Under the application procedures for endorsement, students are instructed to submit a Plan of Work; please note that a memo from the School of Library and Information Science confirming completion of coursework required for SLM endorsement is required instead of the Plan of Work. (2) When specifying the endorsement being applied for, please indicate ND K-12.

Application for Graduation
Students must formally apply for graduation according to Wayne State University regulations. Applications for degree/certificate are made through Academica and are due by the end of the fourth week of classes in the term you will complete your requirements.

Materials for Teacher Certification Office
When students have completed the requirements for SLM endorsement, they must submit the following items to the Wayne State University Teacher Certification Office:

  • memo from the School of Library and Information Science confirming the completion of coursework required for SLM endorsement. Requests for the endorsement memo should be submitted in writing to Jennifer Bondy (aa1676@wayne.edu) upon the completion of the required coursework. Memos will be e-mailed to students the semester following completion of the coursework.
  • completed application for endorsement.
  • copies of all teaching certificates (both valid, expired and out-of-state).
  • current WSU transcript (students are advised to hold this until the MLIS has been posted).
  • official transcripts from non-WSU institutions for all courses being used for endorsement, but not for the degree.
  • copy of test scores for the library media subject test.

It is the student’s responsibility to gather these materials. Once the packet is complete, students should send it to the Teacher Certification Office in the College of Education (Room 469). Please keep copies of all materials for your records.

Other Documents
90-day letters are issued by the Teacher Certification Office. A 90-day letter is a temporary proof of endorsement serving as a bridge between the review and recommendation of a student for endorsement by the Teacher Certification Office and formal endorsement by the State of Michigan.
