Online Program
Description
The SLIS is now offering an online option for its Master of Library and Information Science degree to meet the needs of prospective students who cannot attend physical classes. All coursework for the online program will be conducted online and will include the same content as the regular MLIS program delivered by the School’s full-time and adjunct faculty.
We welcome applicants from anywhere in North America. It is envisioned that the members of this cohort will be part-time students taking two classes (6 credits) per semester and should complete their degree requirements in approximately two years. The SLIS will try to accommodate students wishing to study full time.
Application Procedure
Please review the admission requirements and follow the application instructions available at http://www.slis.wayne.edu/prospective/admissions.php.
Be sure to upload the following documents to your online application:
- Personal Statement and Online Applicant Information Sheet
- Current Resume
Note: When applying to the Graduate School, please indicate the Online MLIS Program as your major on the application.
Deadline
For Winter 2010, applications are due October 1, 2009. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Students not offered admission to the online program may be admitted to the regular MLIS program upon meeting SLIS admission requirements.
Orientation
All online students wishing to start in Winter 2010 are required to attend the SLIS’s mandatory on-campus orientation held December 3, 2009. Students who do not attend orientation will not be able to enroll in classes until this requirement is met. Additional information regarding orientation is available at http://www.slis.wayne.edu/prospective/orientation.php.
Technology Requirements
To attend lectures, communicate with professors and peers and complete assignments, students will use online video conferencing, e-mail, chat rooms and other Web-based technologies. Students selected for the online MLIS program must meet all technology requirements listed at http://www.slis.wayne.edu/technology-requirements.php prior to the first day of class. In addition, students must submit passing test scores on the IC3 exam upon enrolling in LIS 6080, Information Technology.
Students interested in using some of these technologies before enrolling in the SLIS may enroll in the SLIS's Blackboard Basics course. This non-credit course shows prospective students how to get around in Blackboard, including how to electronically submit assignments, post to the discussion boards, send e-mail, and take a Blackboard quiz. Videos, text and interactive "Try It" exercises will familiarize students with how a potential online course may be structured.
To take the course, please visit www.blackboard.wayne.edu. Login and password are both lispreview.
Tuition and fees
Online MLIS students will be charged the same tuition and fee rates as in-state, on-campus students. There are no out of state tuition and fee rates. For current rates, please visit http://www.slis.wayne.edu/tuition.php.
