Urban Librarianship Certificate Admissions

As a signature offering of the School of Library and Information Science, the goal of the Urban Librarianship (UL) Certificate is to enroll highly-qualified students with a demonstrated interest in urban libraries who are excited to spend approximately one year in Detroit focused primarily on this certificate.  All students in the UL certificate will receive in-state tuition. 

Enhanced Admissions Criteria:

  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA.  
  2. Personal statement, between 250-750 words, that details why the applicant feels he/she has the background or interest to pursue the certificate and what career plans he/she has after receiving the certificate
  3. Completion of the MLIS degree or LIS 6010, 6080, 6120, 6210 and 7040.
  4. Personal interview (in person or web-based) may be required.

Enrollment in this certificate is limited to a maximum of fifteen students per year.  Students will matriculate as a cohort.  All application materials must be received by July 1, 2012.  

Students who have already already been admitted to the MLIS program should submit a change of status form.  The change of status form, personal statement, and letters of reference can be directed to:
