Online Programs
Description
The SLIS offers an online option for its Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree and select certificates. All coursework for the online option is conducted online and includes the same content as the on-campus program delivered by the School’s full-time and adjunct faculty. The online option is designed to meet the needs of students who live too far away to attend on-campus classes. Since the primary delivery mode is asynchronous, the online option also appeals to students with scheduling conflicts that make class attendance at a specified time challenging.
The School encourages applicants from anywhere in North America. All online students pay resident tuition! There are no additional costs for non-residents to complete the online program.
Please note: the Graduate Certificates in Archival Administration, Arts and Museum Librarianship and Urban Librarianship are not offered online.
Application Procedure
Please review the admission requirements and follow the application instructions available at http://slis.wayne.edu/admissions/index.php.
Be sure to upload the following documents to your online application:
- Personal Statement and Online Applicant Information Sheet

Note: When applying, please indicate the Online MLIS Program as your major on the application.
Orientation
All online MLIS students are required to attend the SLIS’s mandatory on-campus orientation prior to beginning classes.
Technology Requirements
Students taking online classes will use various media including online video conferencing, email, discussion boards, and other Web-based technologies to "attend" class sessions, communicate with professors and peers, and complete assignments. Students must meet all technology requirements prior to the first day of class. Access to all online classes is through the University's learning management system (LMS): Blackboard. Students who are not already familiar with Blackboard are encouraged to review the Blackboard Guide for Students. The School also provides Adobe Connect 8 for on-demand course content and real time, interactive class sessions and meetings. Incoming students are encouraged to review the Adobe Connect Meeting Tutorial.
Tuition and fees
Online MLIS students are charged the same tuition and fee rates as in-state, on-campus students. There are no out of state tuition and fee rates. For current rates, please visit http://slis.wayne.edu/tuition.php. Note: this tuition differential does not apply to on-campus courses.
