Graduate Certificate in Arts and Museum Librarianship

The Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate program provides students with the education and practical experience necessary for building, organizing, managing, and promoting library collections in music, art, art history, dance, film studies, theater, and communication. The School has partnered with several Detroit cultural institutions such as the Detroit Institute of Arts and Michigan Opera Theatre to develop a coordinated practicum program where students gain valuable experience working with senior librarians and discipline-based staff. The students actively participate in the development of relevant projects and services using digital technology to support their work.

Potential candidates for the Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate include incoming LIS graduate students wishing to pursue a professional career in fine or performing arts or museum librarianship; practicing library and museum staff who wish to advance their competency in the field of fine and performing arts or museum librarianship; and students from other disciplines and professions who wish to obtain an MLIS with a specialization in arts and museum library management and digital curation skills.

The certificate may be completed in conjunction with the MLIS degree or as a post-MLIS certificate. The 15-credit Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate program includes 9 credits of required coursework and 6 credits of a required practicum that rotates students through arts and museum sites. Note:  Students without an MLIS must complete LIS 6010, 6080, 6120, 6210, and 7040 before starting the Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate.

All students in the Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate will receive in-state tuition.

Please note that the Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate  is not available to students in the Online MLIS Program.

Before enrolling in the certificate program, students must meet the program's technology requirements

Beginning January 1, 2012, SLIS will accept applications for enrollment in the Fall 2012  Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate Cohort.  For specific details on application requirements, please see http://slis.wayne.edu/programs/aml-admissions.php.  The Arts and Museum Librarianship Certificate cohort is contingent upon SLIS receiving a sufficient number of applications to meet cohort enrollment requirements.
