Professional and Student Associations
All students in the School of Library and Information Science have the opportunity to become involved in several student organizations. Upon admission, students automatically become members of the Student Organizations in Library and Information Science (SOLIS). They may also participate in local student chapters of several international professional associations. Elections are held each year to select student officers.
Student Organizations of Library and Information Science (SOLIS)
SOLIS is an umbrella organization whose purpose is to liaison with the SLIS and the student groups of the professional associations in order to disseminate relevant information to the LIS graduate student. Also, SOLIS advocates the important role professional membership plays on the road to becoming a successful, innovative leader in the information profession.

American Library Association (ALA)
The mission of the WSU student chapter of ALA is: to facilitate and encourage participation in the ALA; to increase the awareness and use of resources of the ALA, including publications, promotional materials, scholarships, and conferences; to provide a local forum for the exchange of ideas and information about trends, issues, and opportunities in the profession; to develop skills and relationships that will enable students to have a creative impact on the profession; to promote involvement in professional activities; and to increase awareness of the national issues
on Library and Information Science.

American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T)
The purpose of ASIS&T is to provide a format for the professional development of information specialists, to promote and further research and its application, and to make these achievements known to the public. ASIS&T is an organization that strives to build bridges between different scholarly disciplines such as research and technology, and information and users.

Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG)
The purpose of the PLG-WSU is to promote a politically/culturally progressive model of librarianship and graduate library and information science education. The organization’s goals are:
• To provide a forum for the open exchange of progressive political views on librarianship and graduate library education.
• To actively promote diversity within graduate library education and librarianship.
• To disseminate information on important social and political issues in graduate library education and librarianship.
• To disseminate information about financial aid opportunities, internships and fellowships, especially those that promote a culturally diverse and politically active librarianship.
• To facilitate above goals through various activities (seminars, meetings, fundraisers, etc).

Society of American Archivists (SAA)
SAA strives to enhance the education of students interested in archival studies by providing practical resources, networking opportunities and hands-on events, whether they be tours, workshops or the like. This group is active, dynamic and dedicated to the archival profession. In general we are Master's students in the Library and History programs, but we are all in this field to preserve the present day's records for future generations' use.

Special Libraries Association (SLA)
The SLA student group seeks to introduce LIS students to the opportunities available in special libraries and to facilitate communication between students and professionals in the field. Events sponsored by SLA are: mentoring programs, library tours, and panel discussions. SLA members are encouraged to participate in the Michigan Chapter gatherings held periodically in Detroit.
